藏密開山祖師三世諸佛的總集化現蓮花生大師所創，集智慧、慈悲和伏惡的力量於一身。蓮花生大師在文殊菩薩的指引下，集結了梵、藏、漢三地文化，內含道家的“八卦” 及“十二生肖” 組合出的“ 九宮八卦”咒輪，所以叫作《文殊九宮八卦圖》，具有獨特的加持力。
藏地幾乎每戶都有九宮八卦圖，能推算星宿和節氣，進行占卜，指導農作和遷徙，是全能的生活指南和護身符。九宮八卦牌的中央包含仁、智、勇三菩薩，左上為時輪金剛咒輪，右上為防護咒輪。內圈由十二生肖、八卦和九宮組成，涵蓋五行與時間、方位，總括風水與地理。最初以霍巴斯唐卡形式存在，後來發展為可佩戴的九宮八卦牌，廣泛應用於生活中的節氣、吉凶占卜等。
九宮八卦圖能抵擋太歲、劫煞等煞星，阻止不吉方位的凶煞，確保家庭平安、招財進寶，促進和諧與幸福。正中央下方是掌理日月星宿的凶神，並有增長善緣的咒輪和遮止違逆之緣的咒輪，全面增強其功能。
